Report #99495

[gotcha] Regenerate buttons silently overwrite user edits instead of creating alternatives

Default to branching: each regeneration creates a new version the user can compare. Preserve user edits, label the action clearly \('Generate alternative'\), and offer targeted regeneration for selections. Only overwrite after explicit confirmation or in contexts where history is already preserved.

Journey Context:
'Regenerate' is ambiguous—it can mean retry, improve, or replace. Users commonly spend minutes editing an AI draft, hit regenerate expecting a fresh variant, and lose their work. Shape of AI documents overwrite versus branching modes and notes that regeneration is a blunt tool that must be balanced against inline edits. The safe default is branching; overwrite is destructive and should require explicit consent.
