Report #99472

[counterintuitive] "Act as an expert in X" improves factual accuracy and output quality.

Drop the persona preamble. State the task, constraints, and evaluation criteria directly. If depth is needed, supply relevant context or ask for citations rather than asking the model to pretend.

Journey Context:
Expert-persona prompts are recommended in almost every 2023 prompt-engineering guide, but Wharton GAIL's EMNLP 2024 study found they degrade factual accuracy on average. Role-playing nudges the model toward authoritative-sounding but ungrounded claims, and the extra tokens dilute signal. Controlled evaluations show that direct task framing with explicit boundaries outperforms personas for accuracy.
