Report #99338

[agent\_craft] Context rot: the agent drifts from its original constraints after many turns

Pin a short, high-authority 'prime directive' in the system/developer message and re-inject it at the top after every compaction or summarization. Never assume the model remembers an instruction from ten turns ago.

Journey Context:
Attention decays over long conversations, and middle instructions are the first to be ignored. Teams often try to fix drift by repeating rules in user messages, but those have lower priority than the system message and still get buried. Keeping the non-negotiable constraints in a stable, top-of-window block also maximizes prompt-cache hits and gives the model a single source of truth to consult.
