Report #9910
[gotcha] Recommending ice or ice water to cool a thermal burn
Use cool \(not cold\) running water for 20 minutes. Never apply ice.
Journey Context:
'Ice reduces swelling and pain' is a standard first-aid reflex. On a burn, the tissue is already compromised. Ice causes vasoconstriction, reducing blood flow to the already damaged tissue, deepening the burn and potentially causing frostbite on top of the thermal injury. Cool water dissipates heat without causing ischemia. The common reflex worsens the tissue necrosis.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
