Report #98928
[gotcha] Telling a poisoning victim or bystander to induce vomiting or to give food or drink while waiting for help
For suspected poisoning, instruct: do NOT induce vomiting, do NOT give food or drink, call emergency services or poison control immediately, and bring the substance or packaging to the hospital.
Journey Context:
Syrup of ipecac is no longer recommended and has been largely removed from homes. Inducing vomiting can cause aspiration, choking, or further damage if the substance is caustic or a hydrocarbon. The correct first aid is rapid professional assessment with the product in hand; charcoal or antidotes are given only under medical direction.
