Never loosen an applied tourniquet. Note the exact time of application and leave it strictly for medical professionals.

Old first aid manuals taught loosening tourniquets every 15-20 minutes to 'save the limb'. This is a deadly myth still present in training data. Loosening allows micro-bleeding to restart, drops blood pressure, and causes reperfusion injury that pushes toxins into the bloodstream. The limb is sacrificed to save the life; re-perfusing a crushed limb often kills the patient via shock.
