[counterintuitive] Adding an expert persona \('You are an expert in X'\) significantly boosts accuracy

Replace vague expert roles with precise task framing, success criteria, and constraints. If you need domain focus, use a realistic, narrow role in the system/developer message rather than theatrical prompts.

Journey Context:
Research shows personas often do not improve factual performance and can degrade it or trigger sycophancy; 'impossible expert' roles collapse toward generic distributions. Modern instruction-tuned models already have broad knowledge, so the marginal value is in clear constraints, not identity play. OpenAI's Model Spec explicitly directs models not to be sycophantic.
