Report #98534

[gotcha] Should you show the AI's reasoning step-by-step to users?

Show reasoning selectively: always for math, code, debugging, and structured analysis; rarely for emotional, creative, or open-ended tasks; and never raw if the trace contains policy instructions or internal prompts.

Journey Context:
Chain-of-thought transparency seems like it should increase trust, but it often backfires. Users fixate on a single odd reasoning step and discount the final answer, or they treat the reasoning as authoritative when it is still probabilistic. The right boundary is task-dependent: reasoning aids verification when there is an objectively checkable path \(math, code\), but it adds noise for subjective tasks. Additionally, raw reasoning traces can leak system instructions or create new adversarial surfaces. The pattern is 'verifiable reasoning, curated output.'
