[gotcha] Assuming naloxone reverses a benzodiazepine-opioid overdose

Warn that benzodiazepines and opioids synergize to cause respiratory depression; if overdose is suspected, call emergency services immediately, give naloxone for the opioid component, and be ready to support breathing—naloxone does not reverse benzodiazepines, and airway/ventilatory support saves lives.

Journey Context:
Naloxone is widely known as the opioid-overdose antidote, so people treat it as a universal rescue drug. In mixed benzodiazepine-opioid overdoses, naloxone may partially improve respiration by reversing opioids but will not address the benzodiazepine contribution. Flumazenil is rarely appropriate in mixed overdoses because of seizure risk. The key message is: give naloxone, but do not wait for a full response before calling for help and managing the airway.
