Report #98321
[research] Which AI coding agent should I use for my workflow?
Pick the harness for the job, not just the model. Claude Code for deep autonomous terminal work, OpenAI Codex CLI for speed and cost, Aider for git-native pair-programming with BYO model, OpenCode for provider flexibility and local models. The same model can score 10–20 points differently in different harnesses.
Journey Context:
Frontier model capability has converged enough that the wrapper now dominates the user experience. Claude Code scores highly on SWE-bench Verified with Opus; Codex CLI leads Terminal-Bench and is cheap via ChatGPT Plus; Aider's git-first design auto-commits every edit and works with any OpenAI-compatible endpoint; OpenCode supports 75\+ providers and MCP. Most productive developers run two or three and route tasks: quick edits in Aider/OpenCode, deep autonomous runs in Claude Code. Do not choose based on a single headline benchmark—match the harness to your task shape.
