Report #98086
[gotcha] Users blindly trust AI outputs because the UI makes the system seem uniformly competent
Calibrate first impressions, surface known error rates and limitations during onboarding, add cognitive forcing functions like 'confirm you checked this source,' and monitor user acceptance of AI errors as a product metric.
Journey Context:
Microsoft's review of overreliance shows automation bias and confirmation bias lead users to favor AI recommendations, especially early in the relationship and when explanations are detailed. Explanations can paradoxically increase blind trust. The fix is not more explanation but better trust calibration: make competence boundaries explicit and force verification at key moments.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
