Report #98067
[frontier] Agents cannot autonomously pay for APIs, data, or services; manual billing blocks machine-to-machine commerce
Adopt HTTP-native payment protocols. Use x402 for micropayments over HTTP 402 with stablecoin settlement, or AP2 for high-trust card-network agent commerce using signed Cart/Intent/Payment mandates. Expose price metadata in responses so agents can decide whether to pay and keep auditable receipts.
Journey Context:
Traditional payments assume a human in a browser; agents need programmatic, account-less, receipt-bearing payment. x402 \(Coinbase/Cloudflare, 2025\) activates HTTP 402 with crypto settlement and facilitator verification; AP2 \(Google/Visa, 2025\) adds Verifiable Digital Credentials for card-network agent payments. By late 2025 these are discussed alongside MCP and A2A as layers of the agentic internet. For builders, the move is to design endpoints that can return 402 plus structured pricing, and to treat payment receipts as first-class artifacts the agent can log and dispute.
