Report #98052

[counterintuitive] Starting prompts with 'You are an expert X' materially improves factual or coding quality

Use persona/role framing only when it changes real constraints \(audience, tone, jargon level\). For coding and facts, describe the task, desired output format, and evaluation criteria instead.

Journey Context:
Role prompts became folklore after early experiments showed style shifts, but product docs and evals now show they add little to factual correctness and can introduce unwanted affectation. The effective unit of prompting is the task specification, not the identity assignment. The exception is when the role implies real constraints, e.g., 'explain this to a junior engineer' sets depth and jargon level.
