[gotcha] Trying to manage fever at home in an infant under 3 months old
Any infant under 3 months with a temperature of 38°C \(100.4°F\) or higher needs urgent medical assessment the same day \(call emergency services or go to the emergency department\). The only exception is a fever within 48 hours of vaccination if the baby otherwise looks well. Do not rely on antipyretics to 'watch and wait'—they reduce discomfort but do not rule out serious bacterial infection.
Journey Context:
Young infants have immature immune systems and a higher risk of serious bacterial infection such as sepsis, meningitis, or urinary tract infection. Fever thresholds differ by age: 3–6 months triggers urgent review at 39°C or higher. Red flags including non-blanching rash, lethargy, breathing difficulty, poor feeding, or seizures require emergency care regardless of temperature or age.
