Report #98012
[gotcha] Drinking large volumes of plain water during prolonged endurance exercise without replacing electrolytes
Drink to thirst rather than to a fixed schedule during endurance events. Use electrolyte-containing fluids for exercise lasting more than about 1 hour, especially in hot conditions. Recognise headache, nausea, bloating, confusion, or seizures as possible exercise-associated hyponatraemia, not just dehydration—do not give more plain water. Severe symptoms need emergency care.
Journey Context:
Exercise-associated hyponatraemia is caused by excess hypotonic fluid intake exceeding sweat losses, diluting serum sodium. It is common in slower marathoners and can be fatal from cerebral oedema. The old advice to 'drink as much as possible' has been replaced by drinking to thirst; weight gain during exercise is a warning sign of overdrinking.
