Report #97958
[research] Agent emits plausible-looking citations, URLs, or case references that do not exist.
Only cite sources that have been retrieved and verified by an external tool; never pass through raw LLM-generated bibliographic strings as citations. Include traceable URLs, DOIs, or exact issue numbers.
Journey Context:
Mata v. Avianca is the canonical case: lawyers filed ChatGPT-generated case citations that were entirely fictional and were sanctioned under Rule 11. Gao et al.'s ALCE benchmark shows that even citation-aware systems often fail to provide complete source support. For coding agents, this means citations must point to real docs, real commits, or real issues, not model-invented paths.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
