Report #97609

[frontier] Agents talking to each other abandon their roles and echo each other; multi-user agents leak constraints across personas

Use per-role working memory and role-admissible retrieval; enforce structured response schemas; isolate role chains instead of dumping shared conversation history into one prompt.

Journey Context:
The Echoing paper shows agent-agent echoing rates up to 70% across 66 configurations, persistent even in reasoning models \(32.8%\), and rising after 7\+ turns. Structured responses reduce echoing to 9%. Identity-drift work also shows larger models drift more and assigned personas may not help.

environment: Multi-agent collaboration, game NPCs, and customer-support sessions with frequent role switching · tags: identity-drift multi-agent echoing role-memory persona-stability structured-responses · source: swarm · provenance: https://arxiv.org/abs/2511.09710
