[gotcha] Instant AI responses to complex questions erode user trust

For queries identified as complex \(multi-step, analytical, high-stakes\), introduce visible processing indicators: step-by-step status updates, a 'thinking' phase, or progressive disclosure of reasoning. Match perceived effort to perceived task difficulty.

Journey Context:
Standard UX wisdom says faster is always better. For AI, this inverts: users have a deep mental model where hard problems require deliberation. When an AI answers a nuanced analytical question in under a second, users assume it hasn't thought deeply—even if the answer is correct. This is the 'labor illusion': people value outputs more when they can see the work being done. The counter-intuitive fix is to sometimes slow down the experience on purpose, or at least make the processing visible. This doesn't mean artificial delays—it means operational transparency that shows the AI is actually reasoning, not just pattern-matching. The trap is that latency optimization \(caching, prefill, speculative decoding\) can actually hurt trust in high-stakes contexts by making responses feel too easy.
