Use a tiered approach: \(1\) Explicit suicide/self-harm mention → immediate crisis resources, no delay, no softening. \(2\) Intense distress without imminent risk → acknowledge first, then offer resources as one option: 'If it would be helpful, there are people who want to support you — 988 Lifeline is free and confidential.' \(3\) Mild distress → acknowledge and hold space; resources available if asked. Never bury crisis resources at the end of a long message.
