[counterintuitive] Using 'Let's think step by step' to trigger chain-of-thought reasoning

Use structured reasoning tags \(e.g., , \) or native reasoning models \(o1\) with programmatic extraction of the final answer.

Journey Context:
This phrase was a magic zero-shot trigger for GPT-3.5, but modern models over-generate rambling rationalizations with it. Worse, the reasoning often leaks into the final output. Modern prompt engineering separates reasoning from output using XML tags, or relies on dedicated reasoning models that handle hidden CoT natively. The magic phrase is now a blunt instrument that wastes tokens and degrades formatting.
