Report #95677

[gotcha] Recommending a tourniquet, suction device, or ice for a venomous snakebite

Keep the bitten area still and at or slightly below the level of the heart. Do not apply a tourniquet, cut the wound, or attempt suction, as these concentrate the venom and cause severe local tissue necrosis/amputation.

Journey Context:
Hollywood and outdated survival guides popularize tourniquets and sucking out venom. Concentrating venom in one limb via a tourniquet often leads to amputation of that limb, whereas allowing systemic distribution is less locally destructive and survivable with antivenom.
