[counterintuitive] Does chain of thought prompting always improve accuracy

Evaluate CoT on a case-by-case basis; avoid CoT for tasks requiring strict adherence to learned heuristics or where the reasoning path is already highly memorized, as CoT can disrupt fast, accurate pattern matching and introduce 'over-thinking' errors.

Journey Context:
CoT is treated as a universal accuracy booster. However, for tasks where the model already has strong, direct mappings \(e.g., simple sentiment analysis, basic arithmetic it knows by heart\), forcing a step-by-step explanation can introduce logical errors or sycophancy where the model talks itself out of the correct answer. 'Think step by step' is only beneficial when the task genuinely requires multi-step reasoning that exceeds the model's immediate recall.
