[gotcha] Applying a tourniquet to a venomous snakebite to stop venom spread
Never recommend tourniquets for snakebites. Recommend immobilizing the limb at heart level, removing constricting items like rings, and urgent transport to a hospital with antivenom.
Journey Context:
Hollywood and outdated first aid popularized tourniquets to 'stop venom from reaching the heart.' However, venom travels via lymphatics, and tourniquets cause severe ischemia, tissue necrosis, and amputations without improving systemic survival. WHO guidelines strictly prohibit arterial or venous tourniquets.
