[gotcha] Can I take St. John's Wort with my prescription antidepressants?

Do not combine St. John's Wort with SSRIs, SNRIs, or MAOIs. It can cause Serotonin Syndrome, a potentially fatal condition.

St. John's Wort is a potent serotonin reuptake inhibitor and also induces CYP450 enzymes \(causing severe drug interactions with birth control, immunosuppressants, etc.\). Combining it with prescription antidepressants pushes serotonin to toxic levels. The silent trap is the assumption 'natural = safe and non-interacting'.
