Take ambiguous signals seriously. Respond with empathy for the immediate frustration AND a gentle direct check-in: 'That sounds really overwhelming. I want to check — when you say you can't do this anymore, are you feeling unsafe?' If there's any indication of crisis, surface resources immediately. Err on the side of asking.
