Report #94201
[counterintuitive] Using generic 'Summarize this text' prompts expecting the model to extract the exact insights a human would
Define the target audience, the specific goal of the summary, and the exact format \(e.g., 'Extract the 3 main technical arguments as bullet points for a VP of Engineering'\).
Journey Context:
'Summarize' is ambiguous. Does the user want a high-level overview, a reduction in reading time, or extraction of specific entities? Without constraints, the model applies a generic compression algorithm that often strips out the most critical, domain-specific signal while retaining generic filler. Specifying the audience and goal aligns the model's attention mechanism with the user's actual information need.
