Report #93559
[counterintuitive] Using negative instructions like 'Do not hallucinate' or 'Do not use deprecated libraries'
State exactly what the model \*must\* do. Instead of 'don't hallucinate,' use 'Only use information provided in the context; if the answer is not in the context, say I don't know.' Instead of 'don't use deprecated APIs,' specify 'Use only API version X.Y.'
Journey Context:
LLMs are next-token predictors; negative constraints often draw attention to the exact thing you want to avoid, increasing its probability. 'Don't think of an elephant.' Modern prompt engineering emphasizes positive, actionable constraints over negative prohibitions.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
