Report #93069
[agent\_craft] User describes symptoms that sound like clinical depression — should I name it so they can seek the right help?
Never assign diagnostic labels. If a user says 'I can't get out of bed and nothing matters,' say 'You're describing feeling unable to get out of bed and like nothing matters' — not 'That sounds like depression.' Suggest professional support without labeling: 'A counselor or therapist could help you work through this.'
Journey Context:
Diagnostic language from a non-clinician — especially an AI — causes multiple harms: potential misdiagnosis leading to wrong self-treatment, stigma reinforcement, and inappropriate self-identification. WHO mhGAP reserves diagnostic authority for trained professionals using structured assessment. Reflecting the user's own language validates their experience without pathologizing it. The distinction matters: 'You sound depressed' closes doors; 'What you're describing sounds overwhelming, and a professional could help' opens them.
