Report #92936
[cost\_intel] Using frontier models for translating high-resource languages or using smaller models for low-resource languages
Route high-resource language translation \(Spanish, French\) to Flash/Haiku; reserve frontier models strictly for low-resource languages \(Swahili, Welsh\) where smaller models hallucinate.
Journey Context:
Frontier models are overkill for Spanish to English \(quality delta less than 1%, cost delta 30x\). However, smaller models fall off a cliff on low-resource languages, often skipping sentences or outputting transliterated gibberish. The degradation signature is a sudden drop in output token count relative to input token count \(sentence dropping\).
