Report #92719
[frontier] MCP servers are being used as simple tool wrappers rather than architectural infrastructure
Treat MCP as the agent-native USB-C: standardize ALL external integrations \(data, prompts, context\) through MCP servers, replacing direct API clients and ad-hoc RAG implementations
Journey Context:
Teams initially bolt MCP on top of existing REST clients, missing the point. The frontier shift is treating MCP as the sole boundary layer—agents don't call APIs, they connect to MCP servers which handle auth, sampling, and resource subscription. This decouples agent logic from service implementation, enabling hot-swappable tools and cross-vendor compatibility. The trap is thinking MCP is just for tools; the spec covers resources \(live data\) and prompts \(templated workflows\), making it a complete integration fabric.
