Report #91635
[counterintuitive] chain of thought always improves accuracy
Use Chain-of-Thought \(CoT\) selectively. For simple tasks or tasks requiring strict adherence to rules/patterns, CoT introduces unnecessary reasoning steps that can lead to logical detours or 'overthinking' errors. Use direct prompting for straightforward tasks.
Journey Context:
CoT is treated as a universal accuracy booster. However, research shows CoT can decrease performance on tasks where models already have strong, direct pattern-matching capabilities, or where the reasoning path introduces opportunities for error \(e.g., simple arithmetic or strict formatting tasks\). CoT is only beneficial when the task requires complex, multi-step computation or logical deduction that benefits from intermediate state.
