[gotcha] Instant AI responses in high-stakes domains reduce user trust and perceived quality
In medical, legal, financial, or safety-critical AI products, show a visible deliberation phase before the answer: display the AI analyzing the query, checking sources, or evaluating options. If the system does actual retrieval or validation, surface those steps honestly. If not, at minimum show a structured considering-multiple-factors state. Match response timing signals to the gravity of the question, not just the speed of the model.

Standard UX wisdom says faster is always better. For AI in high-stakes domains, this inverts: instant answers to complex questions feel careless, not efficient. A doctor who answers in 0.5 seconds inspires less confidence than one who pauses to think. The same applies to AI. This creates a counter-intuitive design requirement: sometimes you need to slow down the experience to increase trust. The critical constraint is that the deliberation must be honest — if you show checking sources, the system should actually be checking sources. Fake deliberation via artificial delays will backfire if discovered, destroying trust more thoroughly than a fast response. The tradeoff is raw speed versus perceived thoughtfulness, and the right call is domain-dependent: stream fast for casual chat, show work for high-stakes queries.
