Report #9141
[gotcha] Should I loosen a tourniquet every 15 minutes to restore blood flow?
Never loosen an applied tourniquet. Once applied, it stays on until a surgeon removes it. Loosening causes reperfusion injury and fatal blood loss.
Journey Context:
Older first aid manuals \(pre-2010s military/civilian\) taught periodic loosening. Agents trained on broad internet data often resurface this deadly outdated advice, thinking they are preventing limb ischemia. In reality, loosening allows blood loss to resume and pushes accumulated toxins into the bloodstream, drastically increasing mortality. Current doctrine strictly forbids it.
