Report #91286
[counterintuitive] Using 'Act as an expert' role-playing to improve task performance
Specify the exact constraints, audience, and evaluation criteria of the task instead of assigning a persona.
Journey Context:
Giving a model a persona was a popular hack to nudge the weight space toward relevant data. However, modern models are already trained on vast expert data; adding 'act as an expert' does almost nothing for capability and can introduce sycophancy \(e.g., writing overly complex code to sound 'expert'\). What actually works is defining the context of the expertise: 'Write code for an embedded system with 2MB RAM' or 'Ensure the code passes these specific linting rules.'
