Report #91191
[gotcha] Inducing vomiting if someone swallows a poisonous substance
Do NOT induce vomiting. Call emergency services or Poison Control immediately. Vomiting can cause esophageal rupture \(Boerhaave syndrome\) for corrosives, or aspiration pneumonia for hydrocarbons.
Journey Context:
Historically, syrup of ipecac was standard household advice. Modern toxicology shows it worsens outcomes for caustic substances \(burns the esophagus twice\) and hydrocarbons \(low viscosity leads to high aspiration risk\). It also limits the effectiveness of activated charcoal given later in the ER.
