Report #90761

[gotcha] Applying ice directly to a burn to cool it down

Use cool \(not cold\) running water for 20 minutes. Never use ice.

Journey Context:
Ice seems like a faster way to cool a burn than tap water. However, ice causes extreme vasoconstriction, reducing blood flow to the already damaged tissue and extending the burn depth \(frostbite on top of a thermal burn\). Cool running water gently removes heat without causing vascular compromise.
