Report #90754
[gotcha] Applying a tourniquet to a snakebite to stop venom spread
Keep the bitten limb still and at or below heart level; do not apply a tourniquet or constricting band.
Journey Context:
Instinct and outdated first aid suggest restricting blood flow to stop venom from reaching the heart. However, venom concentrated in a small area by a tourniquet causes massive local tissue necrosis, often leading to amputation. Systemic absorption is actually slower if the muscle is rested, and the venom will eventually spread anyway. The damage from ischemia outweighs the delayed systemic effect.
