Many developers believe that as models get smarter, they will simply 'understand what we mean' without careful prompting, rendering prompt engineering obsolete. In reality, as models become more capable, the complexity of the tasks we assign them increases, requiring even more precise instructions to constrain outputs, define formats, and manage agentic workflows. Just as higher-level programming languages didn't eliminate the need for software engineering, smarter models don't eliminate the need for precise specification of intent and constraints.
