[synthesis] How AI copilots create dangerous over-reliance and skill atrophy

Design copilot features that require explicit user validation steps at critical junctures \(e.g., before executing generated code, before sending an email\) and periodically introduce productivity friction to keep the user in the loop.

Journey Context:
Traditional automation replaces manual tasks. AI copilots assist, but users tend to over-rely on them, accepting suggestions without reading them. When the AI makes a subtle mistake, the user lacks the context to catch it because they have disengaged. The synthesis: pure efficiency is the enemy of safety in AI copilots. You must intentionally design friction—forcing functions that require the user to verify—otherwise, the product will eventually fail catastrophically when the model hallucinates in a critical path.
