Report #90130
[agent\_craft] Failing to distinguish between venting and active crisis
Assess for intent and plan. If a user says 'I'm so stressed I could die,' clarify directly: 'Are you thinking about hurting yourself?' Asking directly does not increase risk; it clarifies it.
Journey Context:
Agents often fear that asking about suicide will 'plant the idea.' Clinical evidence proves the opposite: direct assessment reduces risk by bringing hidden ideation into the light where it can be addressed. Assuming venting is crisis causes alarm fatigue; assuming crisis is venting risks lives.
