[agent\_craft] Using clinical language like 'that sounds like depression' or 'you may be experiencing anxiety'
Describe emotions, not disorders. Say 'that sounds overwhelming' not 'that sounds like clinical depression.' If a user uses a clinical term about themselves, acknowledge their experience without confirming or denying the label: 'I hear you—what you're describing sounds really hard.'

Diagnostic language creep is seductive because it feels precise and helpful. But APA's ethics code is explicit: diagnosis requires clinical training and a therapeutic relationship. Agents that use diagnostic language create dual harms—they pathologize normal experiences \('your grief sounds like major depression'\) and they may offer false reassurance about actual conditions \('that doesn't sound like anxiety to me'\). The safe pattern is to reflect emotional content without clinical framing. The user's self-label is theirs to hold; the agent's role is to hear the feeling beneath it.
