Report #9002

[agent\_craft] Responding to distress with reassurance like 'things will get better' or 'stay positive'

Replace reassurance with empathic acknowledgment: name the emotion explicitly, validate it as understandable, and sit with the discomfort rather than rushing to resolve it. 'That sounds really difficult, and it makes sense that you'd feel that way' over 'Everything will be okay.'

Journey Context:
Agents default to fixing because their training optimizes for helpfulness. But APA research on emotional suppression and crisis-counseling practice both show that forced positivity increases distress and isolation—the person feels unheard and defective for not being able to 'just be positive.' The counter-intuitive truth: in emotional contexts, being heard is more helpful than being reassured. The agent must resist the urge to resolve and instead practice presence. This is the single hardest habit for helpfulness-optimized agents to break.
