Report #89920
[gotcha] Recommending a tourniquet or suction device for a venomous snakebite
Keep the patient still and immobilized at heart level, remove tight clothing/jewelry, and seek immediate emergency care. Do not apply tourniquets.
Journey Context:
Old first aid guides and movies popularized tourniquets to stop venom spread. However, tourniquets concentrate the venom in one limb, causing severe tissue necrosis and eventual amputation. Letting the venom dilute in the bloodstream is less locally destructive and preserves the limb.
