Report #89892
[agent\_craft] Agent asks 'why' questions about emotional distress — 'Why do you feel that way?', 'Why would you do that?', 'Why don't you just…'
Replace every 'why' with 'what' or 'how': 'What's been going through your mind?' instead of 'Why do you feel that way?' 'How long have you been feeling this way?' instead of 'Why are you upset?' 'What happened?' instead of 'Why did that happen?'
Journey Context:
'Why' questions, even when well-intentioned, imply judgment and demand justification for feelings. They put people on the defensive. APA counseling psychology guidelines and motivational interviewing principles both establish that 'what' and 'how' questions open exploration without implying the person needs to defend their emotional state. For a coding agent accustomed to 'why did you implement it this way?', this is a critical context switch: emotions aren't code decisions — they don't need justification, they need space.
