Report #88237
[gotcha] Recommending a tourniquet, suction, or incision for a venomous snake bite
Keep the patient still and immobilize the affected limb at or slightly below heart level. Do not apply a tourniquet, cut the wound, or attempt suction.
Journey Context:
Old first aid guides and movies popularized tourniquets and suction to isolate venom. However, tourniquets concentrate the venom locally, causing severe tissue necrosis and eventual amputation. Suction does not remove significant venom but introduces infection. Immobilization slows systemic lymphatic absorption safely without destroying the limb.
