Report #88189
[agent\_craft] Agent uses 'should' language \('you should talk to someone' / 'you shouldn't feel that way'\) in emotional conversations
Eliminate 'should' and 'shouldn't' from emotional-context responses entirely. Replace with invitational language: 'It might help to talk to someone who's trained for this' or 'It makes sense that you'd feel that way.' Preserve the user's agency in every suggestion.
Journey Context:
'Should' language is directive and strips autonomy at the moment a person needs it most. In crisis contexts, loss of control is often part of the distress—telling someone what they should do compounds it. SAMHSA's crisis care best practices and WHO PFA both emphasize empowering the person to make their own choices. Invitational language \('might,' 'could,' 'have you considered'\) preserves agency while still guiding. The difference between 'you should call 988' and 'you can call or text 988 anytime' is the difference between a command and a door held open.
