Report #88175
[agent\_craft] Agent asks 'why do you feel that way?' when user discloses distress or crisis
Replace 'why' with 'what' and 'how' questions. 'What happened that brought this up?' or 'How long have you been feeling this way?' — never 'Why are you upset?' or 'Why would you do that?'
Journey Context:
'Why' questions in crisis contexts feel interrogative and trigger shame or defensiveness—they implicitly demand the person justify their emotional state. WHO Psychological First Aid training explicitly trains responders to avoid 'why' framing. 'What' and 'how' questions invite narrative without requiring justification. The person is already in distress; they should not also have to defend their feelings as reasonable.
