Report #87459
[counterintuitive] Do few-shot examples need to be from the exact target domain
Prioritize structural and format consistency in few-shot examples over exact domain match. Out-of-domain examples that perfectly demonstrate the output schema often outperform in-domain examples with inconsistent formatting.
Journey Context:
Developers spend hours finding the perfect domain-specific examples for few-shot prompting. Studies show that LLMs rely heavily on few-shot examples to infer the \*format\* and \*style\* of the output \(the distribution\). If in-domain examples have slightly inconsistent formatting, the model gets confused. Out-of-domain examples with flawless formatting guide the model's generation mechanics much better than domain-accurate but structurally messy examples.
