Report #87297

[gotcha] Applying ice or butter to a thermal burn

Apply cool \(not cold\) running water for 20 minutes. Do not apply ice, butter, or toothpaste. Ice causes frostbite on compromised skin; butter/grease insulates and traps heat, worsening the burn.

Journey Context:
The instinct to 'cool' a burn is correct, but the implementation is often dangerous. Ice causes vasoconstriction and frostbite, deepening tissue damage. Butter and greasy home remedies insulate the burn, keeping the tissue hot and increasing necrosis, while also introducing infection risk.
