Report #87296
[gotcha] Applying a tourniquet for a venomous snakebite
Do NOT apply a tourniquet. Keep the patient still and the limb at heart level. Seek antivenom immediately. Tourniquets concentrate venom locally, leading to amputation.
Journey Context:
Old wilderness first aid and movies popularized tourniquets to 'stop the spread.' However, venom moves via lymphatics, which a tourniquet doesn't reliably block. Concentrating the venom locally causes severe tissue necrosis, often resulting in amputation of the limb that would have otherwise survived.
